We checked out Johnny Brusco's on a Saturday evening as the first half of a dinner and movie evening out. I had purchased a groupon for this place a month or two earlier, which is always a great option for checking out restaurants you might not normally get to. We arrived right around dinner time, and the place was fairly busy inside - but not packed. We ordered an appetizer of garlic cheese bread and a hawaiian pizza. Positives: -NY Style pizza! Definitely my favorite, and a style you don't see a ton of around KC. -Very friendly staff, our waitress was great. -Great deals (1/2 off large pizza on Sundays?!). -They sell pizza by the slice. Negatives: -Food just wasn't that memorable. It certainly wasn't bad, but nothing that would make me crave a return. I'm slightly torn on this place - part of me thinks that maybe it was just the hawaiian pizza that wasn't good. With a 1/2 off deal, and the ability to buy pizza by the slice, I think I should be able to manage a return trip and try something other than the hawaiian.

The worst buffalo chicken wrap I've ever ate. The chicken tasted like rubber. I've had a better wrap from a gas station and that was only desperate times that forced me to it that. Won't be back.

Pretty good New York pizza! I stopped by for lunch. I did the buffet bar: which had you typical less-then-stellar salad bar. Unlimited pizza by the slices, and the cook kept fresh pizzas coming! It was a bit busy for lunch, and only one waitress was working. She apologized for being slow, stating she was very new. I think she did a great job, but she was clearly a bit overwhelmed with how many tables she had to wait by herself. The atmosphere is a little seedy; big old room that could use a serious remodel, poor lighting, and dark lighting. I'd eat the food again, but would probably get it delivered or as take out.

  • Mihalis P.

The pizza is as close to NYC pizza as I've found in the Midwest. That said, the only way to enjoy this pizza is to pickup the food. Do NOT order delivery. I ordered at 8:30 p.m. tonight and was promised delivery by 9:30 p.m. At 10:00 p.m., with still no food or a call as to what the delay was all about, I was told at 10:05 p.m. after "checking in" with the driver, that I should be patient and he was "5 minutes" from my residence. I canceled the order, requested my refund, and said forget about it. They lost a good customer.

First experience here was less than stellar. Not great service, pathetic excuse for salad bar and horribly dried out pizza on the buffet. Family convinced me to try it again as their garlic knots are delicious. So we went. And Johnny's kept true to my original impression. Service is horrible. The fryer was already shut down at 7pm so no chicken fingers and fries for the kids. Darling daughter's Caesar salad arrived well before everyone else's meals. My buffalo chicken wrap was sloppily thrown together and was nice and cold. I will say the slices are huge, but that's the only thumbs up they get from me.

This place has potential, it really does. The pizza was really good. We had the Margarita Pizza, cheesy garlic bread, and the all meat pizza. There were so many people working and most of them were just standing around. In a restaurant that had maybe three or four tables, 2 people serving would've more than handled it. We had a waiter until the appetizer got to our table and then we got a different one (while the other was still there). Strange, but okay. What goes best with pizza? Beer. Unfortunately, they are having some issues with their liquor license, so only 3/2 beer here. There are wine glasses hanging over the bar, but...no wine can be served. Pretty disappointing as well. They will be an option for take out, but I'd rather have a good drink with my food.

  • Nathan S.

The best pizza we've found in Kansas City. Great crust, and the perfect ratio of cheese to bread to sauce. We like to keep it simple so when we go there we either get cheese or pepperoni. The stromboli is really good to.

Wow wow wow is all I can say right now! I ordered a pizza from here at 11:08am. The lady that answered was super friendly and she did let me know the delivery time was going to be about an hour and 15minutes. Well, at 12:01pm I got a call from Johnny Brusco's. They hung up on me after I answered without saying anything. I called them back and the "owner" answered. He said calls get forwarded to his phone when the store doesn't answer after 4 rings. He wasn't sure why they called but said he would call me back if there was an issue with my pizza but it was probably them calling to tell me that they were on their way. We'll, 12:25 comes around and still no pizza... which is no biggie but the owner said they were probably calling to say there were on their way, so I call the store and they tell me: "we're out of ingredients and had to get some from another store." "The owner screwed us today not scheduling enough." "would you like to cancel your order because we don't have anyone to deliver it." "The delivery guy is making pizzas and we have 6 tables." WOWWWWW! Well, they already charged my card. AND... I had to call and be told this? They weren't going to let me know??!?!! HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'm seriously disappointed. They should look into hiring some new managers. WOW!

We have eaten here 6-8 times in the past year and just took them off our list. The food is ok, notable smaller anount of toppings on their pizzas and for the price, that is unacceptable. The restrooms are never clean with toilets and sinks clearly dirty, add in missing paper towels, soap and look in desperate need of repair and refresh. The recent addition of large TV's does not make up for a dramatic decline in the key areas of a restaurant....not going back

Dropped in here after a bike ride for a slice of pizza and beer. Many of my riding buddies frequent here, but Overland Park is quite a stretch for my Midtown home. As soon as I walked in I was glad to see a Guinness beer tap. That usually will garner an extra half star if not a full one in my book! I ordered a slice of Brusco's Deluxe. One slice here is plenty unless you just ridden 50 miles like I did or you're just ravenous. The crust of the pizza here is excellent... thin, crispy, chewy when you get to the bigger part is the outside... marked with black and brown spots on the bottom just like a good pizza crust should be. The toppings were really good actually, and meets didn't make the pizza drip with grease. The and vegetables after the pizza is done here so you're going to get crisp fresh vegetables instead of cooked ones... as was the case with the onion and peppers on my deluxe. I like that actually. Good stuff and I hope to stop it again sometime.

Great pizza and cold beer - can it get any better? Only with great service. David is fantastic, and Cameron is equally exceptional. You gotta check this place out.

Lucky we had a coupon, their pizza was horrible. No cheese, weak sauce, toppings so-so...I've worked at a pizza place before and this was embarrassing. I feel bad for the kids working there bc they were nice. My wife even added string cheese before she microwaved it.

These guys just can't get their act together. They actually have really good garlic bread, but they couldn't put together the most basic orders if their lives (or business) depended on it. We ordered a dinner salad, a calzone and 2 subs for 4 people. After a bit, they first brought the salad. About 10 minutes later, they brought the calzone. Almost 10 minutes later, they brought the subs! Why would they first bring the one thing that could've sat in the fridge until everything was ready? They said the oven was getting full because of carry-out orders that had come in. Here's an idea, get the dine-in orders in first and tell carry-out it would be a bit longer. When we finally got the subs, there was literally almost no meat in them (I wish I could post a pic). I am not kidding on this, the 2 of us who ordered them sent them back and walked next door to get Subway. There was honestly more meat. This place is really a lost cause at this point.

Completely disappointed. It took 10 min to get our drinks and then after another 15 min I asked the waiter to check on the apps. He forget to order our food. I think the pizza is good but the staff needs to improve.

We had carry out from the 95th street location. Very disappointed. The crust had the texture and taste of the box we took it home in. Maybe it would have been better if we would have eaten there, but we won't be going back....

I love their cheese pizza. It's the real deal New York pie. It's a little saucy, but that's how NY pizza should be. Hand tossed and baked on the floor of the oven, not in a pan. Excellent crust, excellent sauce, excellent cheese. JB's is my favorite local pizza. Compares favorably with d'Bronx pizza

One of the best pizza places around. Just like NY style pizza. Staff is already friendly. Pizza by the slice is da bomb especially if you order it cooked a tad more. Prices are awesome can't beat the specials

Keep right on going... Walked in to see 10 dirty tables, now more than 20 minutes later, only one has been cleaned. Wife wanted Guinness, no dice. They were out of Bud Light and their infamous garlic knots. I ordered an unsweetened tea, got a sweetened tea. Watched a pizza sit done for 10 minutes, no one delivered it to the customer. Three people were available, but no one said a word. Haven't even got our pieces of pizza yet, and the clock continues to tick. Johnny Brusco's should kill the franchise on this one before it ruins any more opinions of their popular brand.

I'm from out of state and I can honestly say this is the best pizza I've ever tasted. Not to mention the specials on drinks are incredible!! If I could bring this place back to my hometown I'd be here a couple times a week!! Come here if you are looking for great pizza and a fun atmosphere. The guys from Alterra say "THANK YOU!!"

Great crust, generous toppings, yummy fresh tasting sauce. My only complaint is that the sauce level was very minimal. Next time I will ask for extra sauce. The garlic knots are yummy too!

OK if you have seen my other reviews you will see my other comments about the Brusco's in Olathe. Before I start on my rant I will give you a little history as I know you want it. I LOVED Brusco's and went there two or three times a week. I lived two blocks from the place. They knew my order, handed me my beer of choice as I walked in and my kids loved it. Good Pizza with cheap beers that my family loved, so how could I not go three times a week. It started going south because waiters weren't listening to orders and they could not put a order together so that the food came out all at once. The nice thing is that I was getting free food every time I left because they constantly messed up the order. GOURMET PIZZA WITH GREEN OLIVES INSTEAD OF BLACK OLIVES. Everyone let me tell you that they messed it up so many times in one night, I walked out with 4 rando slices and a large cheese and large gourmet pizza with green olives for free. Stopped going to that one and then they moved. I hoped with the new moved off k 10 that things might have changed. NOPE still terrible service. Fast forward to 1 hour ago. I tried the overland park location and nothing changed. The one lone waiter had a table of 4 walk out on him because he ignored them, couldn't refill anyone's drinks and I ordered the MY usual. YOU GUESSED IT. I walked out of the pizza joint with a free slice of pizza. Here is the best part. I bet my friend that the slice of pizza in the box was still going to be wrong. I bet her the next 15 lunches if my slice of pizza was still going to be wrong. GUESS WHO IS GETTING 15 LUNCHES FOR FREE!!!!! I was that confident that this place couldn't get the first or second order correct. WHAT A JOKE. The bad part is that the pizza is good. I hoped and really wanted this place to succeed but it is really hard to succeed when they can't figure it out.

  • Starr A.

The price is great here. Cheap beer as well. But I found the cheese to be pretty bland and the salad to be hilariously plain. I feel like the whole place needed a big injection of personality. Didn't realize this was a chain, and maybe that explains the problem? The garlic knots were deeeeeelicious, though. We will come back when we're around. The service was friendly and relatively quick.

Johnny Brusco's OP committed to hosting a pizza party for 20 youth baseball players that won a competition to raise funds for childhood cancer. When the competition was over, Johnny Brusco's OP reneged leaving a childhood cancer foundation without the promised celebration. Probably would have cost Johnny Brusco's OP about a hundred bucks or two but would have made them much more with what the families would have also spent and publicity would have brought. Thankfully Johnny Brusco's Olathe came through and took up the party. JB OP. You will never have my business again

As pointed out by another poster, my bad. Not wood-fired. Still not run-of-the-mill pizza crust. Sunday lunch. Crust is flavorful as was the Italian sausage. Good pizza. Spinach salad was ho-hum--spinach, chunks of mozzarella, warm crumbled bacon, two anemic tomato slices--save your five bucks. Atmosphere is strip mall, quick bite casual not destination dine and linger. Liked the pizza enough to want to return for a lunch of ziti or other pastas.

Having not been to New York, I really haven't sampled anything else that claims to be similar to pizza offered by the Big Apple. I was invited over to Johnny's and found a nice gem even though located in another, you guessed it--strip mall. Johnny's service is spectacular. My friend Lindsay and I were greeted as soon as we walked through the door asking if we had a "Take-Out" order. We then were pleasantly told we could sit anywhere in the joint. It was laid out very well - an octagon style space with tables being well spread apart. We opted for a booth and it didn't take a minute before we were being asked for our drink orders. Suddenly another young lad came over asking us if we were ready to order drinks, not knowing that we already had a waitress. Truly a nice moment. We grabbed a large Caesar salad to share. It was enormous. Surprisingly, I still had room for pizza. Unbelievable. We followed that up with a 12" Great White pizza - a white pizza with chicken, spinach and tomatoes (kudos for giving us actual full slices). It was delicious. Like I said, I'm not an expert when it comes to New York pie but the crust on this was phenomenal - savory and chewy and not too hard, not too soft. Throughout the meal, the service was spectacular. Never a downtime waiting for a refill or being asked how we were doing. We even were greeted by the owner who came over and asked how everything was. He continued on to other tables, greeting and chatting it up with patrons. I noticed many knew him on a personal basis or have been recurring customers. People enjoy a sense of community and familiarity at their dining establishments and this place seems to get that.

I took the kids to this Johnny Brusco's for lunch because they are opening one in Gardner, where we live. I'm glad to say I am very excited after eating there today. The pizza was very good, if a little greasy, and the slices are freaking HUGE. Yeah, I thought I'd get one, as opposed to my usual two, and let the kids each get one instead of splitting one. My reasoning being that I'd eat what they couldn't finish. Hell, I got my own down with a few of the mini garlic knots that we ordered and they each had most of a slice left. We had to get a to go box. Anyway, if I were to return with them I'd get a slice and they'd be splitting one. Another thing, unlike Aisha L.'s experience, I found the crust to be quite thin, and it had a nice char on the bottom. I did go to this place when they first opened and believe the pizza was more like Aisha described it so I guess they've improved over time. I will say the pizza was pretty greasy, but when you get pepperoni and Italian sausage I guess that can be a consequence. One more thing, to put size into perspective, I usually get 2 slices at Original Pizza and have had 3 before (not necessary at all) but 1 did it this day at Johnny Brusco's. I'd say the one slice was a little wider and longer than two at Original but the crust was a little thinner. Anyway, I wont hesitate to recommend trying the place at least. It is one of the least chain-like chains around as far as I am concerned.

Very inconsistent pie here. First and second time here was great we ate in the restaurant, excellent combo pizza, friendly service. Next time I called in to pick up a pizza. After 5-6 rings a teen age girl answered the phone with an attitude, put me on hold for 3-4 minutes. Took the order, I arrived 25 minutes later to discover she totally screwed up the order. Waited for them to correct it, which they did nearly 30 minutes later. The second and last time we ordered a pie to pick up it was once again Miss Personality taking the phone order. Kind of snotty, but mostly clueless. Bottom line was the pizza was undercooked and not that great. I will not go back until the manager replaces the slacker staff with staff that can answer the telephone professionally & take an order correctly. The basic product is pretty good, but the execution sucks. I got talked and going back by the girl friend to share a pie with some friends. It seems to me the quality drop off has hit the lowest point yet. I had two slices that had the flavor of movie theater or mall pizza. This is terrible, somehow they have given up, No flavor, bland, undercooked, & cold. Time to close.

This is my favorite local pizza place. It is spacious, you're not sitting on top of each other (distance between the tables is nice) so you can carry on a conversation without hearing the people next to you. The waitstaff is always friendly and you are never left waiting for drink refills. It is very clean and well lit. The garlic knots are our favorite. For lunch we also usually get a couple of pizzas (I prefer the white). My pre-teens love this restaurant. We always like to finish up with fresh scooped ice cream at their counter. I would have given them five stars, but twice out of ten times going there, the crust on the pizza was charred. I don't like burnt crust on my pizza!

  • Rick T.

I grew up on the east coast. A slice of pie should have to be folded in half lengthwise to eat. It should not be over-sauced. The crust should have some burn spots. This pizza had it all correct. As for the service it could not have been better. Our first visit we had the whole family - all 6 of us. We got to talking with the manager and had a great time. The second visit a month or so later he remembered us and even inquired where the rest of the family was. It truly makes you feel as if you were more than a customer to them. If you want some east coast style pie without the travel expenses, I highly recommend Johnny Bruscos.

Tried yesterday for lunch. Service was very good, pizza not bad either. I ordered the Chicken Florentine, I believe, with pesto sauce, and it was tasty. Chicken was a bit salty, crust was nice. Nothing special about ambiance, but nothing bad. Two TVs, so I was able to catch the KU game I forgot was on :) They also have Blue Bunny (I think) ice cream, and if I was feeling a bit more indulgent, might've gotten some.
